The social networkings are popular amongst people to share photos, find people and why not, show a web site or a product. There is a large number of social networkings, some will attract a lot of people to your site, some will give you the opportunity of having a backlink with high Pagerank, and some others will waste your time.
The best way to use a social network is posting the updates to your friends and they will visit you page if find that interesting. However, if the admins of the site believe that you are Spamming they will disable your account. Many people mistakenly believes that a profile in a social network is a web site himself, but it must only be a way to attract traffic to your own web-site, you cannot place all your business in your profile in Facebook, for example. What would happen if a day you find your account disabled?. -The loss of the 100% of your assets-
Determine which Social Network will bring you more traffic is difficult, it depends on the country, the language... but some does not bring you traffic at all, especially if they are in a different language than your site. But in general is good join a social networking because in your profile you can show the Url of your web-site, and this is a backlink (some use no-follow).

Twitter is the number one, unless you have a good collection of videos in Youtube, a good Facebook strategy a Vendetta in digg, or a network in strumbleupon.
The most important with twitter is to use your own theme and edit the settings to show a link to your page, writing a Bio is also a good idea. When you follow people, they use to follow you and visit your site, however don't try to follow more than 500 members a day, otherwise you will be flagged as Spam and your account will be canceled.

The FB is different than twitter, here you have a list of friends to share messages and photographs with them. People wants you to use your real name and photograph, otherwise you will be reported for impersonation and your account disabled.
To attract traffic using Facebook you have the option to create a group, a facebook fan page, and aprofile in applications like networked blogs. Some people also sends e-mails to their friends in order to invite them to visit their pages. Don't try to join more than 25 members a day or you account will be disabled. Here people posts news which are voted and commented, if you post a new on your blog, you can also post the description of the new, and people will visit you blog to read it. If your new has a lot of favorable votes, you will appear in a top ten list, and of course it means a lot of visitors, however, if your new has a lot of negative votes, will be banned.
Of that kind, you can find programs like digg or Mixx, specially digg, which is a total Vendetta. Be sure that your are posting in the same language of the social networking and that the new is not repeated or you will receive a lot of negative votes.
Other important think is to not post always news from the same domain, or it will be banned.
Social Bookmarking Sites.
This is the case of technoratti, where you can claim a blog and the more is linked by the other blogs of technoratti, the better visibility has. this can help you to increase your Pagerank because having a blog claimed here is having a backlink without no-follow attributes and high Pagerank.
